about hotels with saunas.

It’s no secret. I’m a sauna slut. My sister too.

Any time we travel, we look for a hotel with a sauna. Trouble is, there’s no easy way to do it, which really grinds our gears.

In 2019, over margs in Mexico, our frustration at its peak and our blood alcohol high enough to think this was a sound idea, we took action.

mexico, 2019. the marg session in question.

That was seven years ago. Why’s it taken so long to launch? Because life, liberty, and the pursuit of Lobster Club.

Why now? Because recently we had an emergency. A sauna emergency.

Maja and I were headed to Cleveland for some artist studio visits. As is tradition, we went looking for a hotel with a sauna. Not easy in Cleveland, Ohio. But to our surprise, the Crowne Plaza came through.

We pulled up in our truck (when in Ohio), ready to shvitz, and asked the woman at the front desk where the sauna was. She didn’t look up from her screen.

It’s unavailable. Someone burned it down.

wut?

Ya, someone got mad and just burned it down.

welcome to cleveland
Tadzio's Google review of the Crowne Plaza Cleveland at Playhouse Square: three stars, five for rooms. The front desk said the sauna had been burned down; call and check before booking for the sauna.

That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Burned down the sauna. Never again would we suffer in sauna purgatory. It was time we finally built hotelswithsaunas.com.

still the most insane sauna we’ve been in. on a cruise, of all places.

Fortunately, that marg session was more productive than I remembered.

  • ✓plus saunafinders.com and saunasnearme.com, for good measure.
  • ✓an instagram with a paper trail back to 2019. heritage.
  • ✓even a tagline I totally forgot about.
A text from Ben Strathmore, August 23 2019: Some hotels have saunas. Others do not. These are the ones that do.

what’s live

a minor whoopsie

We wanted to help you find only the finest saunas, so we tried pulling in Google ratings. Somehow we made 26,000 Google API calls for saunas around the world. The bill was so large my bank flagged it as fraud. Oops.

one recommendation

Call ahead. Confirm no one burned down the sauna.

Everything here is vetted-ish. Nothing worse than arriving ready for a sess and learning it’s closed for maintenance. Or worse, learning someone burned it down. So every listing tells you to check before booking, and where we have the front desk’s number, it’s on the page.
